  Race Discrimination Ordinance Just Passed!
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) supports the elimination of discrimination on all grounds and welcomes the passage of the anti-racial discrimination legislation by the Legislative Council on 10 July 2008.

In order to raise awareness and promote understanding of this new legislation, the EOC has already started laying the groundwork through liaison and discussion with our stakeholders; drafting a Code of Practice on Employment; conducting public education on social integration and racial harmony through radio and TV programmes, etc. The Commission would continue to enhance its public education and publicity programmes for the ethnic minorities which include strengthening the on-line resources for ethnic minorities, translating and printing EOC pamphlets and booklets into different ethnic minority languages, and organizing training for ethnic minorities in collaboration with NGOs.

A Snap Shot of “Experiencing EO - Field Visits”

A half-day tour was arranged for EO Club members on 27 June 2008 to visit local social enterprises (SEs) run by YMCA of Hong Kong (Cheung Sha Wan Centre) and New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association for enhancing their understanding of SEs as well as experiencing equal opportunities.

SEs are established to achieve social objectives and equal employment opportunities. The field visits served as the starting point for our members to get in touch with SEs and explore how they can support SEs and corporate social responsibility which has flourished as a major corporate trend in recent years.

  Q & A – “Seminar: 10 Years under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance”

The Equal Opportunities Commission hosted a seminar “Our Ten Years under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO) – Moving Forward, Changing Cultures” in early 2008 to review the impact of the DDO since its implementation from 1996. An international human rights law expert, Professor Andrew Byrnes, gave a keynote speech at the seminar. Experts and stakeholders from the mainland and the local community were invited to join the seminar and share their views at the exchange forums. The fruitful discussions during the Q&A sessions, seminar speeches and presentation notes are now available at the EOC’s website.
