Sexual Harassment Case: Settled by Monetary Compensation Equivalent to 3 Years’ Salary

What is sexual harassment? Some consider it abstract and vague. As a result people polarize the issue, by either trivializing it or exaggerating it. Last year, the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) received 327 complaints under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance (SDO) and one-third of the complaints (105 cases) were related to sexual harassment. Sexual harassment affects both men and women, and often interferes with a person’s work performance and causes immense stress. To know more about the definition of sexual harassment under the SDO and the legal liabilities, please refer to a sample case of sexual harassment handled by the EOC. The Complainant received a monetary compensation approximately equal to her 3 years’ salary.

The seminar on “Preventing Disability Harassment and Handling Employees in Mental Distress” was held for EO Club members on 29 April 2008 to discuss how to deal with these situations in a fair and non-discriminatory manner. Experts in the field, including a specialist in psychiatry, and EOC Senior Officer (Operations) who has dealt with cases of disability harassment, were invited to share their knowledge.
