  1. The EOC Reports on Work Plans and Progress on Policy and Research

Poster on Education Members of the Policy and Research Committee (PARC) of the EOC met on 26 July 2012 to discuss various matters related to the Commission’s work on research and advocacy. Topics covered included the EOC’s new pilot scheme to empower the parents of ethnic minority (EM) kindergarten students to help their children to learn and adapt in school. The pilot service focused on providing information to EM parents about the education system and the paths for their children, promoting parental involvement and support in children’s learning, and facilitating interactions between EM parents and other parents. It is hoped that with the positive experience and feedback from more and more kindergartens, the service could be extended and formalized in the foreseeable future. Subsequently, the Deputy Convenor of the PARC, Dr. John TSE Wing-ling, met with members of the media to share further details of the Commission’s initiatives discussed during the Meeting.

Members also deliberated on the proposal of “Funding Research Projects by the PARC”, a programme to invite interested parties to apply for research funding on subjects relevant to the work of the EOC. The new initiative would allow the EOC to undertake a wider range of innovative research projects that promote the concepts of equal opportunities.

The event, held on 15 July 2012 in Yaumatei, featured a participants’ dialogue with Mr. Lam; sharing by two inspiring guest mentors, Mr. Freddy Law, the founder of InterCultural Education, and the standup comedian, Mr. Vivek Mahbubani; cultural performances; informative game booths; and cricket demonstrations for children and youths. “We are here today to listen and learn, and to try our best to help,” said Mr. Lam. The event ended on a high note with a speech from an 11-year-old Pakistani girl, Kainat RUKHTAR, who urged the community to work together towards a true world of colours: “If all of us learn the art of accepting and respecting different colours and cultures, we will be able to venture to new lands of opportunities.”

  1. “Demonstrate Our Collective Will to Respect Each Other”
The EOC Chairperson calls for non-discrimination of LGBT community

Poster on Community Business’ Hong Kong LGBT Climate Study 2011-12 On 16 July 2012, the EOC Chairperson, Mr. LAM Woon-kwong, participated in the launch of HSBC’s Pride Network Asia Pacific, an initiative to promote workplace equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees of the bank in the region. During the speech, Mr. Lam called on the bank and other multinational corporations to be at the forefront of the movement for equality for the LGBT community. “Adding your weight in calling for legislation to protect the rights of LGBT members in the workplace and in their daily lives would add a powerful voice to the movement and would be seen as a positive service for Hong Kong,” said Mr. Lam. The Chairperson also wrote about this topic in his regular contribution to the column, “On Second Thought,” in the South China Morning Post on 30 July 2012. In the article, Mr. Lam reiterated his call to the private sector to lead the charge: “As an open city that takes respect for human rights as its core value, Hong Kong must practice what we preach and enable all people to lead a life of dignity, without hurtful stigma and discrimination. The private sector’s backing and actions would be a positive and necessary step towards this goal.”
