Visually impaired since the age of two, Mr. Bennet Ha was brought up at the Ebenezer School for the Blind, living and studying with other blind students. After completing Form Three, he was integrated into main stream education, studying alongside with sighted students first at St. Paul’s College for Forms Three to Five and then at St. Stephen’s Girls College for Forms Six and Seven.
 
     
 
After graduating from the University of Hong Kong and got his BA degree in History and Economics, Mr. Ha was employed by the HK Government for 25 years as an executive officer. In the course of his civil service career, he was posted to work in six government departments and policy bureaux at different times, performing duties mainly in the human resource management field. Over the years, he was promoted three times – from Executive Officer II to Chief Executive Officer. He was also selected for an overseas training programme in the UK and obtained an M.Sc. degree in Business Information Technology Systems.
 
     
 
As a member of Retina Hong Kong, Mr. Ha have developed a computer screen reading software to help people with visual impariment use the computer for information access on the internet. Having retired from the civil service in 2005, Mr. Ha spent more than a year to upgrade “Windows Light” which he produced in 2004. The updated “Windows Light 2007” outputs speech in English, Cantonese and Putonghua, it also allows users to adjust the speed of speech and read web pages in Braille. The upgraded software was distributed free of charge to help people with visual impairment obtain digital information.
 
     
 
Mr. Ha overcame his disability and with his will power and expertise developed the 'Windows Light' screen reading software, which opened a whole new world of knowledge and information for people with visual impairment shedding light on what the future may bring. Mr. Ha modestly says he is not particularly intelligent or gifted, he believes that opportunities provided by others coupled with his hard work have helped him progress to where he is.
