"Have Your Say on Family Status"
Youth Debate Competition


To enhance public awareness of the Family Status Discrimination Ordinance and to encourage young people to reflect on related issues, the EOC and the Kowloon Women's Organizations Federation (KWOF) have been jointly organizing a secondary school debate competition, "Have Your Say on Family Status", from April to May 2004.

 

Briefing Session

Applications from 67 schools were received and sixteen of them were selected to take part in the competition. Beginning on 17 April, four rounds of debate will be held, with the finals scheduled for 30 May. A briefing session was held on 29 March 2004 for the participating debate teams, where the motions and pairings for Round 1 were determined in random draws. All competitions (in Cantonese) will be open to the public. The audience can cast their votes for the Best Team Spirit Award and My Favourite Debater Award at the end of each competition. 1st Round

The first round of competition was held on 17/4 where 16 teams debated about family status. See the pictures below to share the excitement. The winners won in the first round will enter the second round on 24/4 (10:00a.m. – 12:00noon at the EOC office). All competitions (in Cantonese) will be open to the public. 2nd Round

The second round of competition was completed, and the teams successfully made it to the Final Four are Munsang College (Hong Kong Island), PAOC Ka Chi Secondary School, Po Kok Secondary School and True Light Middle School of Hong Kong. The four teams will be competing at the semi-final on 8 May (Saturday) from 10am to 12noon at the EOC's office. All competitions (in Cantonese) are open to the public. Semi-final

After three rounds of heated debate, "Have Your Say on Family Status" Youth Debate Competition, co-organized by the Commission and the Kowloon Women's Organisations Federation, is heading into its final stage. PAOC Ka Chi Secondary School and True Light Middle School of Hong Kong will be competing for the champion title on 30 May 2004 (Sunday) at the Central Atrium of Olympian City II at 3:30pm. That will be preceded by the second runner-up match at 2:00pm featuring Munsang College (Hong Kong Island) and Po Kok Secondary School. All competitions (in Cantonese) are open to public. 2:00pm Second Runner-up Match
Motion: The government should encourage employers to hire persons with family status
For: Po Kok Secondary School.
Against: Munsang College (Hong Kong Island)

3:30pm Champion Match
Motion: Family status discrimination is very prevalent in Hong Kong
For: PAOC Ka Chi Secondary School
Against: True Light Middle School of Hong Kong

Final

PAOC Ka Chi Secondary School earned the Champion Title during the finals of the "Have Your Say on Family Status" Youth Debate Competition held on 30 May 2004 (Sunday) at Olympian City 2. Fung Wing Yan of True Light Middle School of Hong Kong and Chiu Ka Man of Po Kok Secondary School were awarded the Best Debater Trophies in the Champion and Second Runner-up Match respectively.

Serving as the adjudicators for the finals were: Prof Nelson CHOW Wing-sun, Chair Professor of the Department of Social Work and Social Administration, The University of Hong Kong, and Member of the EOC; Ms Jessie YU Sau-chu, Chief Executive, Hong Kong Single Parents Association, and Member of the EOC; Ms Cecilia CHEN, Chairperson, The Legal Education Trust Fund, and Honourable Chair of the KWOF; Mr Simon CHAN, Director, Asbury Methodist Social Service; and Ms Sharon CHEUNG Po-wah, Senior Reporter and Anchor, Cable News Channel.
