The Equal Opportunities Commission joins hands with the banking sector to promote fair customer service to minority groups

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has embarked on the first joint effort with The Hong Kong Association of Banks (HKAB) and The Hong Kong Institute of Bankers (HKIB) to co-organize the “Commissioners Dialogue – Treat Customers Fairly – Sharing from Equal Opportunities Commission” on 6 July 2015.

From time to time, minority groups have raised their concerns on the treatment in getting bank service. To address these concerns, this seminar aims at promoting banking practitioners’ knowledge of anti-discrimination legislation and raising their sensitivity to the ethnic culture and gender identity of customers from minority groups.

As an integral part of excellent banking practice, all customers should be treated equitably, honestly and fairly in getting bank services. This is the basic principle underlying the “Treat Customers Fairly” Charter developed by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and the newly introduced section on treating customers fairly in the Code of Banking Practice recently revised by the HKAB. To achieve this, the three collaborating organizations agree that banking practitioners of different levels need to be involved. Therefore, this seminar targets bank staff from front office as well as those centralized offices on compliance, channel management or public relations, etc.

The seminar will equip the participants with necessary knowledge, attitude and skills to provide banking service to customers from minority groups. Trainers from the EOC will elaborate to the banking practitioners on the anti-discrimination ordinances, share about typical scenarios encountered by minority groups and outline the principles of good practice of treating customers fairly and sensitively.
