"New Webpage: “Things We Do, People We Meet – Reflections in Brief”

In this new webpage, we share our thoughts and opinions about the things we do and the people we meet. By presenting our reflections in brief, we would like to let the community know more about our experience and beliefs.

The first article of the webpage talks about Stockholm, a City for All. The EOC has recently visited Sweden, one of the countries well known for its progress in gender equality, accessibility and family friendly policies. Check out this new webpage “Things We Do, People We Meet” for some of our observations in learning about the Swedish government’s broad-based solutions in the quest for a society that is equitable and accessible to all.

Disability Discrimination Case: Light Duties Requested

“Advancing Equal Opportunities”, the EOC’s latest commemorative publication, features 14 enlightening stories of overcoming barriers and the advancement of equal opportunities in Hong Kong. EO Club Members enjoy the privilege of receiving a complimentary copy (sold at HK$88 at major bookstores), which has been mailed to you in late 2007. There is one particular chapter on a seasoned human resources practitioner who shares her experience in handling a discrimination case. In the case she mentioned, a staff member who requested for light duty and accommodation was eventually terminated. Was there any unlawful act? Why? Practical advices are given using the case as an example (pages 92 – 101 of the book). Worth reading!

Handling Mental Health Issues in the Workplace

Due to increasing stress, the number of employees with mental health problems is increasing in recent years. It brings new challenges to the management of staff with mental health issues. This is also reflected in the increasing number of complaints related to mental illnesses received by the EOC. We have invited Dr. Ng Fung-shing, a specialist in psychiatry, to explain at a recent EO Club gathering the common mental disorders in the workplace. Tips for managing staff with mental health issues are given.
