  1. EOC reports on work plans and progress  
     
 
Members of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) met on 17 June 2010 at the 85th EOC Meeting to discuss various matters including: plan to initiate discussions with stakeholders on a proposed Equal Opportunities Tribunal to provide for a user-friendly, formal and flexible adjudication system, so that discrimination cases could be conducted promptly; and the transitional arrangement for employees with disabilities under the Minimum Wage Bill. To ensure that employees with disabilities will not be subjected to abuse and discriminatory treatment, the Commission resolved that the EOC will monitor the situation closely.

  2. Findings of the Formal Investigation on Accessibility in Publicly Accessible Premises  
     
 
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) announced the findings of the “Formal Investigation on Accessibility in Publicly Accessible Premises” which examined 60 publicly accessible premises owned or managed by the Housing Authority, Hong Kong Housing Society, The Link Management Ltd. and various Government departments. In order to tackle the identified deficiencies, the EOC has made the recommendations in respect of the government and property owners and managers.

  3. Unlawful acts of inciting racial hatred through the Internet  
     
 
The EOC expressed serious concern that some derogatory remarks about particular racial groups were posted on the Internet recently. Commenting on the incident, Mr. LAM Woon-kwong, Chairperson of the EOC, said, “The posting of racially derogatory remarks on the internet is a form of racial discrimination and vilification. The Commission is very concerned that the invective, intimidating and threatening comments may put ethnic minorities at a particular disadvantage and is destructive to social harmony in our community.”

  4. Public Consultation on the Revised Code of Practice on Employment under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO)  
     
 
The three-month public consultation on the Revised Code of Practice on Employment under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO) will end on 8 July 2010. The Code provides employers with practical guidance on how to prevent disability discrimination, harassment and vilification to better implement the concept of equal opportunities in the workplace. All are welcome to express their views.
 
     
 
The theme of the programme is to promote racial equality and harmony. It will conclude our year-long radio project and feature performances and sharing by ethnic minorities and artistes including Leo Ku and Miriam Yeung. This radio project which has been broadcast on RTHK Radio 2 (FM 94.8-96.9) 2:00 to 2:30 pm, every Wednesday from May 2009 onwards, highlights weekly interviews on equal opportunities issues and interactive radio drama.

  5. Funding Support for Community to Promote Equal Opportunities  
     
 
The EOC’s Community Participation Funding Programme (2010/11) is now open for application. The maximum funding limit for each community project is $50,000. The EOC has supported over 700 non-governmental organizations and schools in the past to carry out projects that promote public understanding of equal opportunities and the anti-discrimination laws. Application deadline: 31 July 2010
