  1. Human desire for equality is innate, science suggests
Hong Kong should embrace our collaborative nature and innate desire for justice

Last month, an article entitled “Human desire for equality is innate, science suggests,” by Mr. LAM Woon-kwong, the EOC Chairperson, was published in the South China Morning Post. Citing primatologist Frans de Waal’s TED talk in which he discussed an experiment where a capuchin monkey rejected unequal treatment, Mr. Lam argued that the values of collaboration and empathy form the core of our shared humanity and must be nurtured. “Our mission then must be to build upon our better nature: to persistently reinforce our innate sense of equality, to build a society where the equal participation of all members can be facilitated and valued,” wrote Mr. Lam. This and other articles which were a part of his regular contributions to the column “On Second Thought” are available online on the EOC website.

In an effort to promote an inclusive workplace, the EO Club organised a seminar on “How to Prevent Sexual Orientation Discrimination and Age Discrimination in the Workplace” on 29 January 2013. The seminar, featuring speakers from the Labour Department and the Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation Unit of the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau, aimed to equip professional human resource practitioners and employers with practical advice on how to prevent discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and age at work. Apart from sharing on local and overseas cases, good management practices in the workplace to prevent discrimination, including avoiding stereotypes about people of various ages and different sexual orientations, were also discussed. Employers were urged to take proactive and substantive steps to create a discrimination-free work environment for the good of the company.

The EO Club is the Commission’s initiative to assist businesses and organizations in ensuring their preparedness to implement equality standards in their work environment and enhance their understanding of the anti-discrimination ordinances. People who are interested in becoming Equal Opportunities Officers in their organisations should consider joining the EO Club. Membership privileges include access to exclusive workshops, networking opportunities, and priority and preferential rates in attending EOC conferences and seminars.
