Poster of Mental Health Month 2013

The EOC is one of the co-organizers, with the Labour and Welfare Bureau and other public and non-governmental organizations, of “Mental Health Month,” a city-wide mental health education campaign. This year’s theme is promoting “Family Wellness” to all Hong Kong people. The purpose of the campaign is to publicize the importance of mental health and to raise awareness, knowledge and acceptance of people with mental health issues. The “Mental Health Month 2013 Kick-off Ceremony” was held on 6 October 2013 (Sunday) in Victoria Park, followed by the “Mental Health Walk”. The walk through the heart of the city allows community members to come and show their support for the promotion of mental wellness.

On 24 September 2013, the Organizing Committee of the Mental Health Month, in collaboration with the EOC, released the results of the Mental Health Index Survey 2013 so as to understand the mental well-being of the respondents. The Survey found that 75% of the respondents have their mental health index score of 50 or above (out of a full score of 100 which represents full mental health), which is an improvement compared to 65% of respondents last year. Results reveal that age groups of 25-44 and 55-64 show poorer mental health. Importantly, the survey showed that if respondents obtain sufficient emotional support from family members, friends and colleagues, their mental health is significantly better than those who do not.

Visitors to CTgoodjobs’ website can view common discrimination cases in employment uploaded by the EOC, with the aim of clarifying the day-to-day application of the anti-discrimination ordinances and providing easy-to-understand and practical tips on dealing with such issues at work. The first case on the website deals with sexual harassment, which remains one of the most common complaints the EOC receives under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance. Check back regularly to see other real-life cases handled by the EOC as related to employment.
