  1. Completion of All Projects under the Funding Programme of Research Projects on Equal Opportunities 2013/14

The EOC launched the Funding Programme of Research Projects on Equal Opportunities with the aim of encouraging eligible academic and other organisations with inspiring ideas to undertake innovative research projects, so as to further understanding and knowledge of equality. For the year 2013/14, a total of 11 research projects were funded through this scheme. Aside from issues related to the four anti-discrimination ordinances, the projects studied two thematic topics: Sexual Harassment and Ethnic Minorities.

On 7 July 2015, the findings of two studies, funded through this scheme, on the issue of ethnic minorities will be announced. They are: “Breaking through the barriers – Ethnic minority success stories and their implications for policy intervention in Hong Kong” conducted by the Department of Sociology of Hong Kong Shue Yan University; and “Empowerment through Business: South Asian Entrepreneurship in Hong Kong” by the Division of Social Sciences at the Community College of The City University of Hong Kong. With the announcement of the findings of these two studies, all the funded research projects have been completed. Reports of the funded research projects are available at the below link.

  1. The EOC Chairperson Discusses the State of Discrimination in Hong Kong on Radio Programmes

On 27 June 2015, the EOC Chairperson, Dr York CHOW, was a guest on “Young Politician” programme on RTHK Radio 2. The programme offers a platform for young people interested in politics to discuss and share perspectives on current and political affairs in Hong Kong. During his segment, Dr Chow shared his views on the current state of discrimination in the city, including the lack of protection for rights of minorities; the importance of equal treatment for people of different sexual orientation and gender identity; and the way forward for Hong Kong’s equality development.

Separately, Dr Chow and a representative of the EOC were interviewed by Commercial Radio’s Cantonese programme “On a Clear Day” and RTHK Radio 3’s “Backchat” respectively on 30 June. Dr Chow also appeared on DBC’s Cantonese morning programme on 3 July. In sharing the EOC’s response to the legalisation of same-sex marriage in the United States, Dr Chow reiterated that as an international city that welcomes people from all over the world, Hong Kong cannot avoid the discussion on same-sex marriage. While the EOC has no power to handle marriage laws, the Commission works to promote non-discrimination, inclusion, diversity and mutual respect in the society. In general, the EOC advocates that persons of different sexual orientations or gender identity should enjoy as much equal opportunities as possible, as with all citizens and visitors in Hong Kong. Dr Chow urged relevant stakeholders to engage in rational and constructive dialogue on this issue and consider Hong Kong’s own path and approach.
