  1. The EOC Supports International Women’s Day

Talk on gender and violence by Dr. Jackson KATZ

Each year, 8 March is observed as International Women’s Day, which provides an opportunity to celebrate the various achievements of women, including in the social, economic, cultural and political arenas. The United Nations’ theme for this year is “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality.” To support the event and the cause of gender equality – one of the cornerstones of the EOC’s work – the EOC is participating in a series of activities. First, the EOC co-hosted a seminar for university leaders and administrators with The Women’s Foundation (TWF) on 2 March 2016 to explore the responsibility and role that universities can take to create a culture of violence prevention on campus. The workshop featured speakers from the EOC, including Dr. York CHOW, the EOC Chairperson, and Dr. Ferrick CHU, the EOC’s Director of Policy, Research and Training, as well as the internationally-renowned expert Dr. Jackson KATZ, who shared his pioneering scholarship and activism on issues of gender and violence. Dr. Chow will also be attending the International Women’s Day Gala Lunch, organised by TWF on 4 March, which will feature Dr. Katz as the keynote speaker.

International Women’s Day Gala Lunch by The Women’s Foundation In addition to the above events, various organisations, such as The Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions, are lining up a range of programmes and activities to commemorate the International Women’s Day. For example, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant: Integrated Service Centre for Local South Asians (ISSA) of Hong Kong Christian Service is organising the “She Has Dreams” Photo Exhibition cum Celebration of International Women’s Day 2016 on 6 March 2016.   The event will be held from 2:00pm to 5:30pm at Hong Kong Polytechnic  University, and  aims at inspiring and  empowering  women to
unleash their potential as well as increasing general public understanding of South Asians and celebrating their positive contributions to Hong Kong community. The Reel Women Hong Kong is also organising a film festival from 7-18 March featuring 17 movies and documentaries about the female gender. The films will be screened at the Hong Kong Baptist University, the City University of Hong Kong and The University of Hong Kong, as well as Broadway Circuit (bc Sunday) cinemas.

“Voices for Equality” Book Launch by Little People of Hong Kong

The last day of February is observed as International Rare Diseases Day, with the aim of raising public awareness on the impact of rare diseases on the lives of patients and their families. On this day, the EOC calls on the Government and members of the public to protect the equal rights of people with rare diseases, many of whom continue to face stigma, misunderstanding, and lack of opportunities to participate and contribute to society. On 20 February 2016, Little People of Hong Kong (LPHK) organised the “Voices for Equality” event, which also featured the book launch of “Little But Not Less: Understanding Rare Bone Disorders.” LPHK is a foundation that provides support for people of short stature and their families; they seek to enhance public understanding about different types of rare bone disorders and advocate for people with physical differences caused by rare bone diseases to have the same rights and opportunities to live a meaningful life and become a valuable member of society. Dr. York CHOW, the EOC Chairperson, provided the preface to the booklet and attended the event.
