Launched in 2013, the EOC app serves up information on the four anti-discrimination ordinances, latest news about the Commission’s initiatives, as well as videos and radio programmes about equal opportunity and inclusion. Developed according to the Level AA requirements of the World Wide Web Consortium Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, the app comes with a variety of accessibility features, such as a voice-over function and an option to switch to a yellow-text-against-black-background version, that accommodate the needs of persons with disabilities (PWDs), including those with hearing or visual impairment.

Technology has opened the door to new possibilities of experiencing and participating in the world for PWDs. In an article published in am730 on 4 September 2019, EOC Chairperson, Mr Ricky CHU Man-kin offered a few notable examples of technological advances that benefited PWDs in unprecedented ways. “In the past, people with visual impairment usually relied on the Braille, raised markings or tactile lines on paper money to identify banknotes of different values. Now there are mobile apps that can scan the photo of a banknote and read its value aloud,” he wrote. “Wheelchair users also take advantage of apps that show barrier-free routes and facilities in the vicinity.”

  1. Comic strips lighten up Admiralty MTR station with messages of inclusion

Photo of the exhibition board at Admiralty MTR stationA superhero saving an ethnic minority student from the bullies in her class. A mother with visual impairment crossing the street with her son. Two young women ordering from the “couples menu” at a restaurant.

These are all scenes from some of the comic strips currently showcased at Admiralty MTR station, near Exit B. The exhibition, which runs until the end of September 2019, presents shortlisted and winning works from the “Comics” category of the EOC’s “Generation-i” multimedia competition, launched last year to help secondary students get their creative juices flowing while reflecting on the meaning of diversity and inclusion.

The competition also featured a “Video” category, where students produced short films to speak out against prejudice and discrimination against marginalised communities. Check out the winners with the link below.

  1. EOC supports networking event for ethnic minorities

Promotional image of the event, featuring Hong KongMany in Hong Kong take pride in the city’s competitive spirit. When driven to the extreme, however, it risks stigamising those who fall behind as losers and slackers, overlooking how opportunities are unequally distributed in our society.

It follows that providing platforms for disadvantaged groups to expand their networks and unlock more resources is of great importance. The EOC is therefore excited to be the supporting organisation of an upcoming networking event for young ethnic minority (EM) professionals and EM tertiary students, to be organised by the Zubin Foundation under its Opportunity Bank initiative on 17 September 2019, 6:45pm - 8:30pm at EY office, 22/F, Citic Tower 1, 1 Tim Mei Avenue, Admiralty. Themed “Dare to Dream” and boasting a robust line-up of corporate representatives, including signatories of the EOC’s Racial Diversity and Inclusion (RDI) Charter for Employers, the free-of-charge event aims to connect EMs with employers and help the former discern the career paths open to them.

  1. Join Barrier Busters to promote inclusion for persons with disabilities

Promotional image of the event, featuring its colourful maskots and illustrations of landmarks in Hong KongHave you ever wondered how hard it is to communicate without speaking or navigate around the city without using your legs? The obstacles persons with disabilities (PWDs) have to overcome just to get by in life are manifold and sometimes unimaginable. One way to deepen our understanding is to take part in Barrier Busters 2019, a city-orienteering programme organised by the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation for the general public to experience the everyday challenges facing PWDs.

Form a team of five to be eligible for the adventure that starts and finishes in Chater Road (Pedestrian precinct), Central on 3 November 2019 (Sunday). Each team will be given an “AdventureParkHK” map and have to complete assigned and optional tasks to gain points within 3 hours. The team that returns to the finishing line with the highest points within the time limit will win.

Register before 4 October 2019, 11:59pm to get your spot for this citywide exploration with PWDs!
