Promoting Equal Opportunities through Drama

05/10/2003

Over 300 drama lovers and young people from 25 secondary schools attended the "Equal Opportunities Seminar on Education in Drama" today (5 October 2003), to learn about underlining the values of equal opportunities through drama. This educational seminar was one of the major initiatives of the "Equal Opportunities Musical", jointly organised by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) and Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK).

In his opening remarks, Dr. Joseph KWOK Kin-fun, Convenor of the Public Education and Research Committee of the EOC said, "Young people have become an important target for the EOC to generate awareness and understanding of the concept of equal opportunities. We are very pleased to be working with RTHK in organising this educational seminar. In order to create an environment where there are no barriers to equal opportunities and no discrimination, we need the full support of the community. The EOC will continue to form partnerships with different organisations to promote equal opportunities."

Today's speakers included renowned drama director, Mr. CHUNG King-fai; popular composer and drama teacher, Mr. CHUNG Chi-wing; professional playwright, Mr. CHAN Hing-ka; popular DJ, Mr. Michael LEUNG Gai-cheung and Mr. Sam HO Hon-sum, Equal Opportunities Officer of the EOC. They shared their experiences in equal opportunities education, drama and music creation, focusing their discussions on how to conduct public education through drama. Two discussion panels on "Equal Opportunities Education, Creation & Production of Drama", and "Script Writing, Music Composition and Public Education" were conducted in the seminar.

Apart from today's seminar, other programmes of the "Equal Opportunities Musical" include the recruitment and training of volunteer performers and a radio drama series. The radio drama series featuring well- known pop star Ms. Gigi LEUNG Wing-kei (梁詠琪), will be broadcast from Monday to Friday, 13 to 24 October 2003 at 3:00pm-5:00pm during "Showbiz", RTHK Radio 2 (FM94.6-96.9). The 10-episode docu-drama series will highlight real life cases of sex discrimination, disability discrimination and family status discrimination.

The finale of the radio drama series will be a live stage performance of "Equal Opportunities Musical" starring Ms. Gigi LEUNG Wing-kei, DJs from RTHK and young volunteers, to be held on 25 October 2003 (Saturday) at Kwai Tsing Theatre Auditorium. Members of the public can stay tuned to "Showbiz" RTHK Radio 2 (FM94.6-96.9), or check the EOC website (http://www.eoc.org.hk) and RTHK website (http://www.rthk.org.hk) to obtain free tickets after 13 October 2003.
