Where We Belong

Around 8% of Hong Kong’s population are non-ethnic Chinese, totalling nearly 600,000 people, according to the latest Government statistics.

But racial diversity does not necessarily mean inclusion. Because of entrenched language barriers and inadequate support, ethnic minority youth often face disproportionate struggles in their studies and career development. This sense of isolation is even more acute among migrant domestic workers, as the Chinese community rarely engages in any meaningful interaction with them or sees the person behind the diminutive “helper” label.

The works in this section, created by two students with ethnic minority backgrounds and a migrant worker, explore ideas about home, belonging and the elusive question of “who is a local”.
