  1. The EOC Holds Seminar on Formulation of Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy in Sports Sector

Seminar on Formulation of Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy in Sports SectorIn May 2015, the EOC announced the findings of the ‘Questionnaire Survey on Sexual Harassment for the Sports Sector’, which showed that almost 90% of the responding national sports associations (NSAs) had not formulated an anti-sexual harassment policy. To follow up on this issue, on 25 September 2015, the EOC organised a Seminar on Formulation of Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy in Sports Sector, in collaboration with the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) and supported by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD). This seminar aimed to promote the message of preventing sexual harassment to the sports sector, and to equip the organisations concerned with the skills to formulate their own policy on preventing sexual harassment and handle related complaints. Dr. York CHOW, the EOC Chairperson, said, “By collaborating with different NSAs, we will promote the importance of preventing sexual harassment and formulating a clear and comprehensive policy on the prevention of sexual harassment. This will not only help NSAs alleviate their legal responsibility, as an employer, and a service provider, but more importantly, it will enable everyone to work or take part in sports activities in a safe, fair and mutually respectful environment free from sexual harassment, which in turn will help enhance our mental and physical health.”

  1. The EOC Expresses Concerns about Racial Discrimination

EOC Public Forum 2014On 30 September 2015, the South China Morning Post published a Letter to the Editor from the EOC Chairperson, Dr. York CHOW, in which he expressed the Commission’s concern with the recent incidents of discrimination involving ethnic minorities, including in access to housing as well as their portrayal in the public domain and the media. He also reaffirmed the EOC’s commitment to advancing equal opportunities for Hong Kong’s ethnic minority community and encouraging everyone to embrace a more inclusive definition of a “Hongkonger.” Dr. Chow wrote, “Whatever our racial origin, we are all people of Hong Kong, and we all deserve to have every opportunity to pursue our dreams.”

To engage stakeholders in discussing the Commission’s work in this area, as well as other initiatives on equal opportunity issues in Hong Kong, the EOC will organise the Public Forum on 24 November 2015. Tentatively scheduled to be held at the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Building adjacent to the Quarry Bay MTR Station (Exit C), the Public Forum will feature reports on the EOC’s work progress and achievements, and sharing of the Commission’s future work plan. This year, the EOC has chosen “Ethnic Minorities Education and Employment Challenges” as the special theme of the Public Forum. In line with the theme, the EOC will introduce the strategies and work of the EOC’s Ethnic Minorities Unit. Arrangements are also being made to invite representatives from the Government and from both the public and private sectors to share their relevant policies and practices on enhancing the educational and employment opportunities of ethnic minorities in Hong Kong.

  1. Youth Challenge Programme Drama Project by Prospects Theatre

Poster of Jockey Club Equal Opportunities Drama ProjectThe EOC is delighted to be collaborating with the Prospects Theatre Company for the Youth Challenge Programme Drama Project 2015/16, following the pilot project in 2014/15. The drama project targets students through innovative dramatic arts, with the aim to help instil the values of equality and social justice from an early age. This helps to form the necessary foundation of a truly inclusive society for all. Under this year’s programme, students from six participating secondary schools will be trained by the Prospects Theatre. They will be given 20 hours of training by the instructors from the Prospects Theatre. The training involves creating and writing drama scripts centred on equal opportunity concepts, as well as performing acts. After completing the training, the students will then be arranged to perform on stage in their respective schools in front of their classmates. Last year, most of the plays created by the students were originated from the difficulties they faced in everyday life, such as bullying and being isolated at school. The real-life topics helped build rapport and encourage self-reflection on the importance of inclusion among the student audience.

Separately, the EOC is a supporting organisation to the Jockey Club Equal Opportunities Drama Project run by Prospects Theatre Company. Funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, this project involves citywide drama competition and a host of drama-related activities to promote the concept of equal opportunity and inclusion among students. The project will be officially launched on 13 October 2015 at Shatin Town Hall. Dr. York CHOW, the EOC Chairperson, will be one of the officiating guests.
