Prior to coming to Hong Kong, I was a secondary teacher and a private tutor back home. I later met a lot of workers who were in the same position as I am – a degree holder leaving their profession to work as a domestic helper. I also learned the sad truth that it does not matter here, because people see us as “just a maid’; nothing more, nothing less.
Despite our busy schedule, some of us find time to pursue a “normal” life beyond the maid persona, and do the things we enjoy on our days off, becoming the person we want to be: a painter, photographer, mentor, etc.
