When I go grocery shopping at the wet market, I try to speak as little as possible. The hostile stares would be too much to bear. One time, as I hesitated for a moment about making a rather expensive purchase, the stall owner snapped, “Where do you think you are? Mainland China?” I thought to myself, why would a customer be treated like this?
