Season’s Greetings on behalf of the Board and Co-opted Members and staff of the Equal Opportunities Commission. We are pleased to provide you with information on the following topics with relevant links.

  1. “Education is the key to the future”
The EOC Chairperson calls for the EDB to promptly provide equal educational opportunities at the Meeting of the Legislative Council Panel on Education

Cover of the EOC’s Report of the Working Group on Ethnic Minority Education On 12 December 2011, the EOC Chairperson, Mr. LAM Woon-kwong, spoke at the Meeting of the Legislative Council Panel on Education in support of equal education opportunities for ethnic minority (EM) children. The EOC expressed once again our deep concern on the existing barriers to quality education for ethnic minority children, many of whom face tremendous difficulties in the mainstream education system. These views echo the EOC’s Report of the Working Group on EM Education, published in July 2011, which has generated considerable public discussion. The EOC continues to advocate the strengthening of pre-primary/junior primary language support, the development of an alternative curriculum/qualification assessment, and the need for better information gathering for policy formulation and improvement of support measures purposes.

  1. An Equal Workplace for All
The EOC gives legal assistance in a disability discrimination case

Picture on scales On 15 December 2011, the EOC issued legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance, Cap. 487 in the District Court on behalf of a complainant whose employment was terminated by her former employer allegedly on the ground of her having to take sick leave for medical examinations and treatments due to her illness. Her employment service was allegedly terminated under the pretext of poor business. A number of employees who take sick leave continue to face unfavourable treatment or dismissal under various pretexts. The EOC offered legal assistance in this case in the hopes of raising public awareness that workplace discrimination based on disability is illegal and unacceptable.
