Introduction

To promote the values of diversity, equal opportunities and inclusion among the younger generation and rally young staunch supporters for equal opportunities, the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has been running the Equal Opportunity Youth Ambassador Scheme (the Scheme) since the 2022/23 academic year, and it has consistently received a favourable response. In order to sustain the positive impact of the Scheme, the EOC will organise the Scheme again in 2025/26 school year to further promote diversity, equal opportunities and inclusion to young people.

Objectives

  • To enhance the knowledge and experiences of equal opportunities among the Youth Ambassadors through participation in the experiential learning activities arranged under the Scheme.
  • To engage students from tertiary education institutions to support equal opportunities and increase their sense of connection and belonging with the EOC.
  • To foster spirits of inclusion and diversity among the young generation and establish a team of Youth Ambassadors to help spread the messages of equal opportunities within their peer groups.

Programmes

Under the six-month Scheme, an array of experiential learning activities will be arranged for the Youth Ambassadors to facilitate their understanding of equal opportunities. Among the activities planned (subject to confirmation) are:
  • Orientation gathering

Through games and interaction, the Youth Ambassadors will get to know each other. They can also learn about the work of the EOC and the anti-discrimination ordinances.

  • Visit to Mental Health Experience Museum

By visiting Mind Space, Hong Kong’s first Mental Health Experience Museum, the Youth Ambassadors will not only gain insights into the development of psychiatric services in Hong Kong, but also experience the everyday challenges faced by people with mental health needs. This immersive experience will deepen their understanding and raise their awareness of mental health issues.

  • Sporting activity with athletes with disabilities

The Youth Ambassadors will experience running with a blind-fold and learn how to be a guide runner for runners with visual and hearing impairments during a training session.

  • Training on anti-sexual harassment

The Youth Ambassadors will attend a workshop on anti-sexual harassment hosted by the EOC’s Anti-Sexual Harassment Unit. Apart from enriching their knowledge of sexual harassment, they can also learn to be active bystanders and help prevent sexual harassment incidents or assist the victims.

Following the workshop, the Youth Ambassadors will be required to complete an online course on the prevention of sexual harassment on campus and launch a promotional project to spread anti-sexual harassment messages on campus.

  • Multicultural community tour

The Youth Ambassadors will experience the cultures of local and ethnic minority communities through visits to religious establishments and famous landmarks, as well as by sampling traditional foods.

  • Company visit

Through the visit, the Youth Ambassadors will learn about the advantages of implementing diverse, equal, and inclusive policies in the workplace, as well as the benefits of adopting universal design.

  • Barrier-free community exploration activity

The Youth Ambassadors will take on the roles of wheelchair users and their carers to gain firsthand insights into the everyday challenges they face in the neighbourhood, and to better appreciate the importance of a barrier-free environment. During the activity, they will also learn about various assistive tools designed to support people with disabilities.

  • Recognition Ceremony

At the ceremony, the Youth Ambassadors will be presented with certificates to signify their successful completion. Those who organise outstanding projects on promoting anti-sexual harassment will be invited to share their outcomes at the event.

Note: Most activities will be scheduled for Saturday afternoons. The activity schedule will be included in the acceptance email sent to the Youth Ambassadors.

Requirements and Recognition

In order to complete the Scheme, the Youth Ambassadors have to fulfill the following requirements:
