  1. “Discrimination is everyone’s loss”
The EOC promotes racial equality on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

The quote is an apt reminder on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, marked annually on March 21st, of how far we have yet to go towards racial equality. To commemorate the day and widen public awareness of their rights and responsibilities in a racially inclusive society, the EOC placed a newspaper advertorial in various English and Chinese newspapers. The advertorial supplement provides an overview of our efforts and available resources to combat race discrimination in Hong Kong. In addition, the EOC supported community events to mark this day. On March 17th, HK Unison organized the annual “International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination Carnival”, while Caritas Youth and Community Service hosted the “Cross Cultural Carnival 2012” on March 18th. EOC representatives were available at both events at our information booths to answer questions from the public and promote knowledge of the Race Discrimination Ordinance.

Dr. John Tse, Deputy Convenor of the Policy and Research Committee of the EOC will attend our radio programme “Equal Opportunities Diversity Project (平等機會多元共融行動)” on 21 March 2012, from 2:05 to 2:30 pm on RTHK Radio 2 (FM 94.8-96.9) to explain our work to promote racial equality and eliminate discrimination.

  1. “Accessibility is no longer an issue only for people with disabilities”
Presentations from the EOC’s Sharing Session on Accessible Public Transport Services now available online

Photo taken at the Sharing Session on Accessible Public Transport Services With Hong Kong’s ageing population, accessibility is no longer an issue only for people with disabilities. Mindful of the fundamental role played by public transport services in improving access for all, on 10 March 2012, the EOC organized a Sharing Session on Accessible Public Transport Services to review the existing challenges faced by people with disabilities and others in accessing these services and explore the way forward. The presentations of the various panelists with disabilities are now available on the EOC’s website. They provide useful perspectives into the current situation in the accessibility of public transport, particularly rail and bus services, and how these measures can be further enhanced.
