EOC video gives voice to persons recovering from mental illness

Sometimes the best way to learn about a community is to let them tell their own stories and hear them in their own words. Representation matters, especially for marginalised groups like people who are recovering from mental health issues.

Which is why, after a local TV station aired a drama series last month that showed a character with mental illness go on a killing rampage, the EOC invited actual members of the community to share their thoughts about such media stereotypes, how labels and stigma can impact recovery, and what positive difference the media can make.

The EOC also talked to Dr May LAM, Vice-President (Censor and Education) of the Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists who highlighted empirical data to debunk myths that associate mental illness with violent tendencies. 

These candid and affecting conversations have now been edited into a short video, available on the EOC’s Instagram and Facebook page, “EO Matters”. Within a week, it has reached over 100,000 people and attracted nearly 1,000 interactions, including likes and shares. Check it out now with the links below.
