EOC hosts visits for Mainland judges and delegation from NPC and CDPF

After overcoming the three-year long pandemic, both Hong Kong and the Mainland have resumed normalcy, allowing the EOC to restart face-to-face exchanges with our Mainland partners and guests.

On 22 March and 18 April 2023, the EOC hosted two visits for over 50 Mainland judges and legal professionals, who are participating in the Doctor of Juridical Science (JSD) Programme and the Master of Law (LLM) Programme for Chinese Senior Judges, both run by The Centre for Judicial Education and Research cum Identification of Hong Kong Law of The City University of Hong Kong. The purpose of these visit programmes is to familiarise the participants with Hong Kong’s common law system, as well as the functions and operations of Hong Kong’s statutory bodies.

During the exchange sessions, EOC Chairperson Mr Ricky CHU Man-kin introduced the EOC’s work and Hong Kong’s anti-discrimination ordinances, while the Mainland judges shared their judicial work across the border. These exchanges proved to be fruitful, as both sides gained up-to-date knowledge of each other’s legal systems.

On 19 April 2023, the EOC welcomed a delegation consisting of representatives from the Legislative Affairs Commission and the Social Development Affairs Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the China Disabled Persons’ Federation (CDPF). The objective of the visit was to strengthen cross-border collaboration to protect and promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.

The development of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) has boosted the mobility of people and cross-border travel across the region, thereby underscoring the importance of accessibility for people with disabilities. During the visit, Mr Chu detailed how the EOC has contributed to building a barrier-free environment in Hong Kong through law enforcement, investigation, policy advocacy and education. In particular, he stressed how the EOC has pushed forward the idea of universal design, which is the creation of products and facilities that cater to the needs of everyone in society, including but not limited to people with disabilities. As for the Mainland delegation, members shared how the Mainland fosters an inclusive environment at the national and city levels.
