EOC’s survey on sexual harassment featured in Asia-Pacific Human Rights Information Center journal

The EOC’s “Territory-wide Representative Survey on Sexual Harassment in Hong Kong 2021” was published in Human Rights Education in Asia Pacific (Volume 12), a leading Japanese human rights journal produced by Asia-Pacific Human Rights Information Center (HURIGHTS Osaka), which serves as an information hub of international human rights standards and practices.

HURIGHTS Osaka, in collaboration with local, national, regional and international institutions, has been undertaking different initiatives to promote human rights in Asia and the Pacific. This journal is their annual publication that features a range of studies and articles across the region, with the aim of encouraging information and knowledge exchange on human rights in the region. This volume was themed “human rights education and promotion”, as the editorial team would like to emphasise the complementary effects of both educational initiatives and awareness-raising campaigns in the area of human rights advocacy.

The EOC’s survey on sexual harassment in Hong Kong, released officially in May 2022, revealed that about 17.8% and 11.8% of the over 5 000 respondents reported having been sexually harassed online and at work respectively over the 24 months prior to the survey. The survey was the first of its kind in terms of its sample size and coverage of the general population in Hong Kong. The findings captured huge attention from the press and provided important evidence on the need for greater cross-sector efforts to tackle sexual harassment.

The EOC is delighted to contribute its survey to the journal and hopes to exchange insights and knowledge with the global community.
