EOC organises “Under the Same Sky” film screening for blind people and those with visual impairment

On 24 March 2024, the EOC organised a screening of the “Under the Same Sky” short film series with audio description at a cinema. The event was attended by around 100 participants from various local organisations that serve people with visual impairments. EOC Chairperson Mr Ricky CHU Man-kin and Executive Director (Operations) Dr Ferrick CHU Chung-man also joined the screening, which is part of the EOC’s campaign to promote the concept of universal design in Hong Kong. The audio description version of the short film series was produced with the assistance of the Audio Description Association (Hong Kong).

In his opening speech, EOC Chairperson Mr Chu said the screening demonstrated that individuals with different abilities can enjoy equal opportunities to participate in community activities. “Audio description services transform visual images into spoken language, presenting the film’s visuals to audiences through concise, vivid, and imaginative verbal descriptions by professional audio describers,” he said. “Such services can help individuals with various needs, including people with visual impairments and the elderly, to enjoy films and other visual programmes.”

The EOC released the “Under the Same Sky” short film series last year. It features eight touching stories on the impact of different forms of discrimination, including those based on disability, pregnancy, breastfeeding, family status, and race. Through the emotional narratives of the films, the EOC aims to foster empathy and challenge prejudices among the public.
