EOC’s Racial D&I Sports Day promotes multiculturalism through the power of sports
On 21 April 2024, the EOC organised the Racial Diversity & Inclusion Sports Day 2024 to promote racial inclusion and cultural diversity, as well as to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the implementation of the Race Discrimination Ordinance. The event was held on the campus of the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, which is also the partner of the event. The opening ceremony was performed by Mr CHEUK Wing-hing, GBS, JP, Deputy Chief Secretary for Administration of the HKSAR Government, Ms Linda LAM Mei-sau, SBS, EOC Chairperson, and EOC Members.
In his opening speech, Mr Cheuk said, “Promulgating racial inclusion and creating a harmonious society calls for the collaboration and support of the entire society. The Racial Diversity and Inclusion Sports Day allows participants of different ethnicities, backgrounds, ages, and professions to make friends through sports and enable communication through games and competition. I am very delighted to see members of the public from the sports, education and corporate sectors, community organisations and my fellow colleagues from Government Departments taking part in the Racial Diversity and Inclusion Sports Day, joining hands in building a more diverse and inclusive society through practical actions.”
EOC Chairperson Ms Lam welcomed all the guests and participants to the event. She highlighted the power of sports to break down social barriers. “Sports is a great leveller. On the sports field, all that matters are skills, teamwork, and grit. Differences in culture, language, and skin colour no longer count when players come together to win as a team,” she said.
The event began with an invitational dodgeball game, featuring teams composed of EOC Members, celebrities, athletes, and representatives from diverse cultural backgrounds. Following this, 16 teams of students from primary and secondary schools competed in the 6-on-6 dodgeball tournament. Tsing Yi Trade Association Primary School and Delia Memorial School (Glee Path) emerged as the champions in the primary school and secondary school divisions respectively. Additionally, 10 corporate teams participated in a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, with EY emerging as the champion.
