Current support for caregivers of the elderly is insufficient, survey finds

As Hong Kong continues to deal with the issue of population ageing, it is crucial that we not only address the needs of the elderly, but also provide support for their caregivers.

According to a recent study by the Hong Kong Women Development Association (HKWDA), of the 774 individuals surveyed, 71% of the respondents said the Government’s support for home-based elderly care is inadequate, while 74% of the participants said there is not enough support for caregivers from the Government.

When asked whether a monthly subsidy could relieve the burden on full-time carers, over 90% of the respondents said they agreed or strongly agreed. Over 80% of the respondents also said increasing the number of elderly day care centres could alleviate the burden on caregivers.
