TWF seeks participants for study on experiencing menopause at work

The Women’s Foundation is partnering with The University of Hong Kong’s School of Business to conduct a study on the experience of menopause at work. The research team is currently seeking working individuals experiencing menopause or perimenopause to participate in the study. The aim of the study is to break the stigma surrounding menopause, and foster greater public understanding and dialogue on the issue. The EOC is a supporting organisation of the project.

Menopause is defined as the absence of menstruation for 12 consecutive months. The transitional period is often accompanied by a range of symptoms that can affect physical, emotional and psychological wellbeing. These symptoms may include night sweats, insomnia, brain fog, headaches, weight gain, fatigues and mood changes. The transition typically occurs in the mid-40s to mid-50s and can last from several years to over a decade.

Led by Professor Bonnie Hayden CHENG, the study will examine challenges menopausal individuals face at work, identify the factors that can mitigate the impact, and explore the implications for the workplace.

Participants in the study will be asked to complete a 15-minute baseline survey, followed by weekly check-ins for six weeks, with additional follow-ups at six months and one year. Through the longitudinal data collection, the study aims to put forward practical recommendations for employers and community stakeholders to empower individuals experiencing menopause or perimenopause in the workplace.
