EOC Chairperson calls for the promotion of accessible tourism

In 2025, the number of visitors to Hong Kong reached 49.9 million. In order to ensure the continuous growth of the tourism industry and the economy, it is vital that city remains an attractive destination for visitors from diverse backgrounds and with various needs.

In an op-ed published in HK01, EOC Chairperson Ms Linda LAM Mei-sau highlighted that promoting accessible tourism holds the key to strengthening Hong Kong as a tourist destination. By enhancing the exchange of inclusive tourism information with cities in the Greater Bay Area, Hong Kong could further strengthen the development of accessible tourism in the region. In addition, the city could consider leveraging technology to provide appropriate itineraries for visitors with diverse needs, such as barrier-free routes, family-friendly routes and information on the locations of Halal-certified restaurants. Aside from improving hardware and facilities, the EOC also proposed to incorporate equal opportunities and accessible tourism training initiatives into subsidised programmes for the travel industry, such as those funded through the Development Fund for the Travel Industry,  enabling frontline workers to develop the skills to meet the needs of visitors from diverse cultural backgrounds and with diverse abilities.

Ms Lam wrote, “Promoting accessible travel not only contributes to the development of the tourism industry but is also a crucial step towards building an inclusive society. With the government, the industry, and the public working together to integrate the concept of inclusion into every aspect of tourism, Hong Kong can ensure that the slogan ‘Let’s Go the Extra Mile’ becomes a tangible travel experience for every visitor, thereby enhancing its reputation as an internationally friendly city and attracting even more travellers.”
