Equal Opportunity Youth Ambassador Scheme 2024/25 Concludes with Staunch Support from Tertiary Institutions and Student Achievements in Promoting Anti-sexual Harassment on Campus
14/06/2025
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (14 June 2025) held a recognition ceremony for the Equal Opportunity Youth Ambassador Scheme 2024/25. In the presence of EOC Chairperson Ms Linda LAM Mei-sau, EOC members, and tertiary institution representatives, dozens of Youth Ambassadors were presented with certificates in recognition of their commitment, enthusiasm, and achievements in their participation in the programme.
The EOC launched the Equal Opportunity Youth Ambassador Scheme in the 2022/23 academic year to promote the values of equal opportunities, diversity, and inclusion to young people. Running for the third year, the programme has continued to receive strong support from the education sector, attracting nearly 200 applications. This year, 50 students from 14 tertiary institutions were selected as Youth Ambassadors with the Scheme setting new records for the number of participating institutions, applicants, and selected Youth Ambassadors.
In her welcome remarks, Ms Lam said, “It is truly encouraging to see the Youth Ambassadors learning with an open mind, participating actively, and exploring the values of diversity and inclusion in depth. As the future stewards of our society, they not only need to develop positive and correct values, but also learn how to respect others’ boundaries. Therefore, we have kept anti-sexual harassment as one of the key components of the Scheme this year. We hope that tertiary students will learn to stand up, say ‘no’ to sexual harassment or inappropriate behaviour, and work together to build harassment-free campuses.”
Over the past six months, the Youth Ambassadors participated in various experiential learning activities, deepening their understanding of the needs of different communities and embracing the values of diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI). Activities included training with athletes with disabilities and learning how to be guide runners for individuals with visual or hearing impairments; visiting a company to learn about the advantages of implementing DEI policies in the workplace; participating in a community multicultural tour with visits to religious establishments and community landmarks to explore local cultures and the cultures of ethnic minorities; and experiencing the challenges faced by wheelchair users and carers in daily life to understand the importance of accessible environments.
In addition to providing in-person and online training on the prevention of sexual harassment for the Youth Ambassadors, the EOC also provided opportunities for them to create their own anti-sexual harassment projects to promote the message of building safe and harassment-free campus with mutual respect to their peers. Online and offline anti-sexual harassment promotional campaigns were organised by the Youth Ambassadors, either individually or in small groups. These included a movie screening, the setup of a promotional booth, the production of posters and handbooks, as well as the publication of social media posts and short videos. The EOC also invited two groups of Youth Ambassadors to present their projects at the recognition ceremony.
During the ceremony, seven Youth Ambassadors were recognised with the “Most Active Participation Award”. Aside from completing all the required assignments, they also actively participated in all the activities, demonstrating their dedication and commitment to promoting equality and inclusion. In addition, several Youth Ambassadors from the past two cohorts were invited to share their experiences and how they have applied their learnings from the Scheme in their daily life, in their studies, and at work. Their stories illustrate the impact of the Scheme in nurturing the next generation.
The successful completion of this year’s Equal Opportunity Youth Ambassador Scheme was made possible by the support of various organisations. The EOC expresses its sincere gratitude to these organisations, including tertiary institutions, Hong Kong Network for the Promotion of Inclusive Society, Hong Kong PHAB Association, MTR Corporation Limited, and WEDO Global.
The EOC will continue to organise the Equal Opportunity Youth Ambassador Scheme in the 2025/26 academic year, please refer to the Scheme’s website for details.
