EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Discrimination Case
25/11/2004
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today initiated legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO), Cap. 487 in the District Court on behalf of a woman who was dismissed by her employer because of taking sick leave for medical appointments and for an operation.
The EOC has granted legal assistance in this case because it involves an important principle of how the dismissal of an employee with a disability may amount to disability discrimination. By taking this case to court, the EOC hopes to raise public awareness on the requirement to protect employees who needed to take sick leave for treatment of illnesses.
