The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (23 September, 2003) issued legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO), Cap. 487 in the District Court on behalf of a woman who is a wheelchair user and is unable to gain access to her premises. The woman is seeking the construction of a ramp to the entrance of the building in which she lives.


The EOC has granted legal assistance in this case on the basis that the case raises an important question of principle in the area of disability discrimination in the provision of means of access. The Commission is working towards eliminating this type of discrimination, which is prevalent in Hong Kong.
