EOC Welcomes District Court Ruling

18/04/2005

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) welcomes the judgment delivered in the District Court today (18 April 2005), which ruled in favour of an employee, a teacher, who was ill and that an employer had committed an unlawful act of disability discrimination by dismissing him on account of his illness.

Chairperson of the EOC, Mr. Raymond TANG said, "Today's court decision is an acknowledgement that the community does not tolerate such disability discrimination, and that it is wrongful for employers to dismiss employees simply because they are sick. This sends a strong message to employers, and they should be mindful that employees who are sick and unable to attend work, are entitled to protection under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance."
