EOC Welcomes Settlement with Government Departments on the Kowloon Bay Health Centre Incident
06/04/2001
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) welcomes a settlement that is finally reached among the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (the former Urban Services Department), the Home Affairs Department, the Lands Department and the Complainant in respect of the complaints lodged against the aforementioned government departments. These complaints are on the illegal structures and vilifying banners erected on government land, in the vicinity of the Kowloon Bay Health Centre.
The government has made it clear that it will not permit the posting or display of any bills or posters, or the erection of any structure, vilifying persons with disabilities on government land.
The EOC welcomes the departments' affirmation that vilifying banners/posters/structures on government land merit special attention, and will be removed speedily.
The Commission also welcomes the government's commitment to lay down clear procedures and steps to establish a co-ordinating framework for the enforcement agencies, in order to prevent recurrence of similar incidents.
