Mrs. Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa Visited the Equal Opportunities Commission

Mrs. Zanele Mbeki, spouse of the Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa visited the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (17 April 1998) and met with EOC Chairperson Dr. Fanny Cheung Mui-ching.

Dr. Cheung introduced the vision and mission of the EOC and explained its work in implementing the Sex Discrimination Ordinance, the Disability Discrimination Ordinance and the Family Status Discrimination Ordinance. Dr. Cheung also explained to the visitors EOC's public education strategies and the various publicity materials developed to promote equal opportunities.

Mrs. Mbeki is active in the promotion of social and economic development in South Africa, especially in promoting the well-being of rural women.

At the meeting both parties discussed common concerns about discrimination in South Africa and Hong Kong, particularly in relation to women and persons with a disability.
