EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Discrimination Case
18/09/2006
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (18 September, 2006) issued legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO), Cap. 487 in the District Court on behalf of a wheelchair user. The Plaintiff is complaining that he has great difficulty in moving in and out of the building where he resides, because there is a flight of five steps connecting the lift lobby and the main lobby. He is seeking the construction of a permanent ramp to rectify the access problems in the building.
The EOC has granted legal assistance in this case on the basis that it highlights the importance of providing adequate means of access to buildings for persons with a disability (PWDs). The Commission is working towards eliminating such types of discrimination, which is a great barrier to the independent living and personal development of PWDs.
