EOC Promotes Racial Harmony through Public Education

19/03/2008

In commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21st, the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today reiterates its support for the enactment of legislation in Hong Kong that tackles racial discrimination.

Mr. Raymond TANG, EOC Chairperson said, “The EOC is committed to promoting diversity and equality, fostering an inclusive society in which all individuals are treated with respect and dignity. However, a law on its own is not enough. Legislation could only be effective if complemented by public education that helps people understand the harm caused by discrimination. Indeed, we have stepped up our public education since 2007 to promote racial harmony and diversity in Hong Kong.”

The EOC has just started a roving exhibition on its photo competition titled “Powerful Images of Racial Harmony” since 18 March 2008 at several MTR stations. The photo competition, with 700 entries received, is part of the EOC’s campaign to promote racial harmony and inclusion.

Another inclusion initiative co-organized with RTHK Radio 2 is a year-long radio programme titled “Equal Opportunities Diversity Project” which features weekly interviews with guests on equal opportunities issues and radio segments titled “Ethnic Minorities’ Cultural Class (地球村補習社)” introducing languages, cultures and life styles of ethnic minorities (see Attachment).

The winning photos of the “Powerful Images of Racial Harmony” and the radio segments of the “Ethnic Minorities Cultural Class” have been uploaded on the EOC’s new webpage “A World of Colours”.

“The enthusiastic participation in the photo competition shows that members of the public are becoming more aware of diversity issues and many view the multicultural reality in Hong Kong in a positive light,” concluded Mr. Tang.

The photo exhibitions will be held from 18 March 2008 to 16 April 2008 at the following MTR stations.
