EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Discrimination Case
08/01/2009
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (8 January 2009) issued legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO), Cap 487 in the District Court on behalf of a woman who was dismissed by her employer because of her disability due to gastritis and haemorrhoid.
The EOC has granted legal assistance in this case because it highlights an important principle of employers’ obligations under the DDO to provide reasonable accommodation to employees who have a disability. By taking this case to court, the EOC hopes to remind employers that it is unlawful to dismiss an employee on the ground of taking long sick leaves without providing reasonable accommodation.
