EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Discrimination Case

03/06/2009

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (3 June 2009) issued legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO), Cap. 487 in the District Court on behalf of a wheelchair user, who has cerebral palsy. The Plaintiff has great difficulty in entering and leaving the building where she resides, because the flights of steps at the entrance and passage pose a barrier to her. She is seeking the provision of a suitable wheelchair access in the premises.

The EOC has granted legal assistance in this case on the basis that it highlights the importance of providing adequate means of access to buildings for persons with a disability (PWDs). The Commission is working towards eliminating disability discrimination in the provision of means of access, which is a barrier to PWDs.
