EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Discrimination Case

24/02/2010

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (24 February 2010) issued legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance, Cap. 487 in the District Court, on behalf of a woman who was terminated by her former employer on the ground of her disability, namely antral gastritis with positive helicobacter pylori infection, and taking sick leave for treatment of illness.

The EOC has granted legal assistance in this case because it is prevalent in Hong Kong that employees with long term sick leave are dismissed by their employers upon return to work. By taking this case to court, the EOC hopes to raise public awareness of the issue of disability discrimination in the workplace.
