EOC’s Response to Judiciary’s Review on Adjudication of Equal Opportunities Claims

01/09/2011

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) welcomes the Judiciary’s affirmation that anti-discrimination statutes are social legislation protecting civil rights and that equal opportunities (EO) claims should be adjudicated in a speedy and inexpensive manner, as suggested in a review paper released by the Judiciary today (1 September 2011).

Mr. LAM Woon-kwong, Chairperson of the EOC, said, “It is precisely for the said reasons that the Commission has recommended that a special Equal Opportunities Tribunal (EOT) be set up in order to simplify the adjudication process and to make it more user-friendly.”

“Our initial view is that the consultation offers a good opportunity for all stakeholders and the public to give views on how best to improve the adjudication process for EO claims. The Commission will study the Judiciary’s proposal in detail and provide our views in due course,” said Mr. LAM.
