EOC reaches over 100,000 with online campaign for breastfeeding equality

In celebration of this year’s World Breastfeeding Week (1-7 August), the EOC went all out on social media over the past week, from a photo hashtag blitz to law explainers and a video on Facebook to tips for employers and service providers on Linkedin. To date, the integrated campaign has reached over 100,000 on the Internet.

Facebook users were invited to comment on the EOC’s post by uploading a photo with the hashtag #SupportBreastfeeding (#一人一相撐母乳餵哺) or sharing information on breastfeeding-friendly places in the city. The post was complemented by a series of visual explainers of recent amendments to the Sex Discrimination Ordinance. Effective since 19 June 2021, the amendments have introduced express protections against discrimination and harassment on grounds of breastfeeding, and apply to key areas of public life, such as employment, education, and provision of goods, services or facilities.

To raise awareness among employers, the EOC is partnering with The Women’s Foundation to organise a Zoom seminar on 24 August (Tuesday) at 12:30pm that contextualises the legislative change within overall employer best practice around supporting new mothers in the workplace. Peter READING, Senior Legal Counsel at the EOC will provide an overview of the new protections and join a panel discussion with Carli YUNG at Nomura and Dr Patricia Ip at Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative Hong Kong Association, which will focus on the health benefits of breastfeeding, as well as the positive impact a breastfeeding-friendly culture and work environment can bring to businesses.

In addition, the EOC has produced an Announcement of Public Interest (API), now running on radio stations, as well as free and paid TV channels. Find out more from our resources below, and join us in supporting women’s right to breastfeed.
