Lessons on equality from the Tokyo Olympics

EOC Chairperson Mr Ricky CHU Man-kin recently published an article in the South China Morning Post, Inmedia and StandNews, reflecting on the message of diversity inherent in the Olympics, as well as the status of racial equality in Hong Kong.

“Sports can and should be a great equaliser. The Olympics is the ultimate testament to that,” he wrote. “People are respected for their talent regardless of where they are from, their ethnicity and the citizenship they hold.”

Is our city living up to this ideal of equality? As Mr Chu pointed out in the article, even though the Race Discrimination Ordinance protects everyone, ethnic minorities continue to face micro-aggressions and prejudice on an everyday level. Every now and then, the EOC hears accounts of unfair refusal in premises leasing, due to discrimination by landlords or fellow tenants and inequality in bargaining power.

“We desperately need the lessons of inclusion and solidarity the Olympics is teaching us, especially in these challenging times,” said Mr Chu.
