How you can support this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Proclaimed in 1992 by the United Nations, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) on the 3rd of December aims to advance the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in all spheres of society.

In a short but striking video, the UN has made a strong case that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a disproportionate impact on PWDs worldwide. It is imperative that efforts at recovery include them in decision-making processes rather than leave them further behind. Hence the theme for IDPD this year, “Leadership and participation of PWDs toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world.”

While the UN will host a webinar on 3 December about the increasingly important role of assistive technologies in promoting disability inclusion, organisations in Hong Kong will be holding a variety of events as well in the spirit of IDPD. Two examples are:

  • Barrier Busters 2021: Organised by the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation, this fun and immersive experience in Central invites participants to form a team of four on 12 December (Sunday) and complete a series of tasks in simulated environments based on the everyday life of people with visual, hearing or mobility challenges.

  • Webinar – “The Development of Audio Description Services in Hong Kong”: Co-organised by Hong Kong Society for the Blind, Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Blind Union, this virtual event will offer insights into the current application of audio description (AD) technology in arts, entertainment and sports events, as well as how AD services can be broadened in the near future. It will be held on 11 December (Saturday), and discussions will be conducted in Cantonese with sign language interpretation.
