D&I in practice: a look at the banking and catering industries

Much ink has been spilt over the business case for diversity and inclusion, but what does this mean in practice? In two videos released on YouTube last month, the EOC invites representatives from the banking and catering industries to talk about how they address the needs of customers from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

In the first video “Helping with Language Needs: Communicate Effectively for Business and CSR”, Ms Christina YUNG, Regional Head of Diversity, Inclusion and Financial Vulnerability, APAC at HSBC shares some of the practices the bank has put in place to better serve its ethnic minority customers. These include: translating important documents into Hindi, Nepali, Punjabi and Urdu; creating videos in the same languages about how banking can help with everyday life; working with NGOs to reach out to diverse communities; and hiring non-ethnic Chinese talents to work as Customer Service Ambassadors at six designated branches.

In the second video “Catering to Diverse Needs: Good for Business, Great for Inclusion”, Ms Sharifa LEUNG, Managing Director of 3 Hani Enterprises Limited explains what Halal food refers to, and how eateries can receive Halal certification in Hong Kong. Also featured is a local Halal dim-sum restaurant that caters to members of the Muslim community, whose population in the city is estimated to be around 300,000.

Check out the videos for inspiration on how you can realise the potential of diversity and inclusion for your own business!
