Hong Kong must nurture young DEI leaders, writes EOC Chairperson in HK01 article

On 14 October 2022, EOC Chairperson Mr Ricky CHU Man-kin published an article on the online media outlet HK01, sharing key updates about the EOC’s latest youth engagement efforts.

Quoting President Xi Jinping who said in his important speech on 1 July that “Hong Kong will prosper only when its young people thrive”, Mr Chu emphasised the need to listen to the voices of the city’s youth and to mobilise them in building an inclusive society.

To connect with young people and inspire their interest in issues relating to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), the EOC launched its Instagram account “EO Matters” last September and gained over 8,200 followers within a year’s time. And just three weeks ago, the EOC rolled out a first-ever Equal Opportunity Youth Ambassador Scheme that aims at nurturing young DEI leaders through a host of experiential and mentoring activities.

Mr Chu also deliberated in the article the importance of creating a safe and inclusive learning environment for young people. From advocating a stronger mechanism to monitor the effectiveness of measures meant to facilitate the learning of Chinese as a second language among non-ethnic Chinese students to recommending funding support for universities to set up an equal opportunity office, the EOC has been urging for policies and measures that would enable our youth and children to flourish academically and socially.

Separately, Mr Chu contributed another op-ed article to Sing Tao Daily on 16 October to address recent reports of sexual harassment at secondary schools and universities. Besides explaining how the Sex Discrimination Ordinance protects students from sexual harassment in educational contexts, he called on organisations, especially educational institutions, to take preventive steps, particularly by putting in place a formal and comprehensive anti-harassment policy and conducting periodic reviews.
