EOC holds sharing session for foreign domestic worker employment agencies

On 26 July 2023, the EOC held a sharing session titled “Understanding Hong Kong’s Anti-discrimination Ordinances and Creating an Inclusive Work Environment” for employment agencies of foreign domestic workers. The aim of the session was to enrich their knowledge and understanding of Hong Kong’s anti-discrimination ordinances in human resources management.

The event was co-organised by eight organisations, including Chinese Dream Think Tank, Hong Kong Commercial Chamber Ltd, Asosiasi Perusahaan Penempatan Tenaga Kerja Terampil Indonesia, Coalition of Global Home Service Sustainable Development Limited, DH Employment Research Non-profit Team, Quadripartite Alliance for Harmonious Employment Practices Limited, The Hong Kong Asia Employment Agencies Limited and The Hong Kong Chamber. The event attracted around 80 participants, who were mostly members of the co-organisers.

During the session, potential examples of discrimination during the recruitment process were illustrated, and recommendations on how to prevent discrimination were provided. The participants also learnt the basic principles of designing job application forms and some tips on promoting employee integration and creating an inclusive working environment.

In his opening remarks, EOC Chairperson Mr Ricky CHU Man-kin said, “Foreign domestic workers made a significant contribution to Hong Kong’s sustainable development. When the needs and rights of foreign domestic workers are given proper attention, they can work at ease, ultimately benefiting employers. Professionals from employment agencies, who act as intermediaries, can help both employers and foreign domestic workers fully understand each other’s rights and interests, making it easier to reach a consensus. This is definitely a win-win situation.”
