EOC Chairperson briefs Legislative Council on tackling sexual harassment in tertiary institutions

On 20 May 2024, EOC Chairperson Ms Linda LAM Mei-sau, along with EOC representatives, attended a meeting of the Legislative Council’s Panel on Constitutional Affairs to present the EOC’s efforts on tackling sexual harassment in tertiary institutions to Members.

In her opening remarks, Ms Lam stressed that the EOC attaches great importance to, and is deeply concerned about, the issue of sexual harassment on the campuses of tertiary institutions, especially in light of media reports alleging such incidents during orientation camps. “Over the years, the EOC has maintained close contact with tertiary institutions to foster the creation of safe campuses,” she said.

The paper submitted to the Panel outlined the EOC’s multi-pronged approach to promoting harassment-free environments in tertiary institutions. This includes conducting in-depth research studies, providing online educational modules and tailored in-person training sessions, as well as targeted publicity initiatives. In preparation for the upcoming orientation activities this summer, the EOC wrote to 21 tertiary institutions in April 2024, calling on them to require students, especially student leaders in charge of planning and executing orientation events, to receive anti-sexual harassment training.
