EOC holds ceremony to recognise racially friendly schools

On 5 July 2024, the EOC held a ceremony at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Auditorium of the Hong Kong Palace Museum to commend 158 kindergartens, primary and secondary schools for participating in the 2023/24 Racially Friendly Campus Recognition Scheme.

Supported by the Education Bureau, the Scheme, which is in its second year running, encourages schools to promote racial inclusion through student activities, teacher training, and publicity campaigns. This year, the number of participating schools surged to 158 from 60 last year. At the ceremony on 5 July, over 130 principals and teachers from participating schools were present to celebrate their achievements.

In her opening speech, EOC Chairperson Ms Linda LAM Mei-sau said, “The increase in the number of participating schools indicates that schools appreciate the importance of the values of diversity, equality, and inclusion, and are keen to impart these values on their students. It is also a clear sign that schools and teachers are aware of their responsibility to instil positive values in their students.”

Dr CHOI Yuk-lin, Secretary for Education of the HKSAR, and Prof LEE Chi-kin, President of The Education University of Hong Kong, were the Guests of Honour at the ceremony. The event also featured sharing sessions by representatives from WEDO Global, Seekr, mLang, and a non-ethnic Chinese master student from the City University of Hong Kong. The speakers explored different strategies to foster racially inclusive environments in schools.
