EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability and Pregnancy Discrimination Case

24/01/2014

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (24 January 2014) issued legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (Cap. 487) (DDO) and Sex Discrimination Ordinance (Cap 480) (SDO) in the District Court on behalf of a kindergarten teacher. The plaintiff alleged that her contract was not renewed after she had suffered from work injuries and after she had informed the employer of her pregnancy.

The EOC has granted legal assistance in this case because there is prevalent discrimination against employees suffering from disabilities as a result of work injury and employees who are pregnant. By taking this case to Court, the EOC hopes to raise public awareness of these discriminatory practices and to remind employers of the protection against disability discrimination and pregnancy discrimination under the DDO and the SDO respectively.
